All of the biggest heists in the world have one thing in common: A daring audacity to break the network of protection and security technology that have become so advanced and sophisticated over the years. This infographic presents some of the world’s largest, and infamous, heists.
In 2003, thieves cleared out 123 of the 160 vaults in Antwerp's Diamond Centre. Located in a maximum security cellar, the total value of the stolen diamonds has been estimated at 100 million euros, earning it the title of theft of the century. It was the second time in 10 years that the Centre was robbed, and to date, none of the stolen diamonds have ever been recovered.
The biggest heist of them all? The Central Bank of Iraq. A day before the United States started bombing Baghdad in March 2003, nearly $1 billion was stolen from the Central Bank. The general manager of the bank had claimed the robbery was conducted by professionals, denying any connections to dictator Saddam Hussien. However, it was later discovered that Saddam Hussein had ordered $920 million to be withdrawn and given to his son, Qusay.
